Iraq

By Shirine A. Hossaini

Iraq, land of my father

and of his father before him

Iraq, land of culture

and science and beauty

What has become of you?

Your buildings are pockmarked

and your children are dying

Everywhere you look

the people are starving

and desolate

For what cause?

Your overflowing cup

has dried up

and you are unable

to serve even yourself

What good is pride and dignity

to a dead man?

Open your doors!

Even if the devil enters

and takes your soul

your children will have

the chance to grow up

and kick him out.
